"Harmonizing Technology with Society"

is the topic of the "International Workshop on Information Systems for Social
Innovation (ISSI) 2009". The National Institute of Informatics (Japan), the
University of Freiburg (Germany) and the Vienna University of Technology
(Austria) will hold this work on September 30, 2009 from 10am to 6pm at the
National Center of Sciences in Tokyo, Japan.

ISSI 2009 has two objectives:
a) Understanding the side effects of centralized and long-term archiving of
personal data and their cross-state disclosure to third parties across different
domains of regulations and thereby identification of research challenges for IT
security and privacy
b) Fostering the collaboration between Europe and Japan

Austrian, Japanese and German researchers and companies will present their
approaches for ensuring privacy and IT security in Internet services across
countries. The German Ambassador for Japan will open this workshop. The
European Commission will present the European Data Protection Directive and
the regulations for disclosing personal data in non member states of the
European Union. The exhibition of ISSI 2009 will show results of on-going
research activities and opportunities for a research exchange between Europe
